BACK GROUND INFORMATION OF THE SCHOOL

The Makathay Primary School was founded on the 18th September 1992 by one head teacher Mrs. Daisy H. Thoronka to help minimized the high level of Illiteracy in the Makathay community- Bombali District- Northern part of Sierra Leone, she started with few pupils and later the numbers of pupils start to grow. They where using the old church building to conduct classes, they where on it for ten years before a building of 4 (four) classrooms were constructed. The building was constructed and finance by the late Pa. Kandeh Kalokoh. Since then that building was used by the school.

One of the problem we where having was that the classes only stop in class four (IV) if the children promote to class five (v) their parent have to transfer them to Kalangba School which is about three (3) miles from Makathay.

We came to the conclusion that the idea of our children transferring to Kalangba School to continue their primary school should stop. What we did was to build a make-shift structure to accommodate the classes Five (5) and Six (6) this structure was finance by us.

On that note, we need finance to put up a two building to accommodate classes five (5) and six (6) respectively and also staff room and a small office for the Head Teacher for administrative work. Also considering the face that present structure is in a total state of disrepair, we will also need to do some repair. The school lack of teachers. Presently among the three teachers we have two are paid by government, while the one is paid by us because of the late approval by the ministry of education.

SCHOOL NEEDS

It is very crucial for children in poor condition to have better education with no support. The school have 12 orphans that are suffering in the light of the war, most of them they burnt their village houses. The school is going on with a lot of constrain like school materials such as reading books, chairs, tables, chalks, pens , pencils structure of the building, generator and computer. They need support in all this for the children to have a better education in Makathay Community School, because children are the life of the world and the key to success. In the school they normally speak their native language such as LOKO AND KRIO; they speak and write English 70%. But the teachers are trying very hard for them to have the world favorite that is English. The school is playing a vital rolled to enrolled children life for a brighter future. The school needs partners to collaborate with and help generate funds or materials for the local Makathay primary school.
